PERSONALITY
Joe is well aware his size is intimidating, so he tries to offset it by cracking jokes and playing the part of a brainless gun jock, but when needed he casts it aside and is a consummate professional. When things start to go bad, he generally responds with a joke to relieve the tension.
He is generally trusting of strangers, his theory being that he can survive any sort of attack they may unleash on him (but then he will stop trusting them and usually kill them). For him, trust is everything; it is what allows a group of people to become more than just the sum of their parts.
Because of his size and the protection afforded him by his Destroyer armor, he insists on taking point in an operation.
He is an open-minded person and does not have a problem in general with other races; he prefers to judge people on their individual merits. The one sort of person he cannot tolerate is a child abuser. If he sees it going on, he will intervene and it takes all his will not to immediately attack the abuser.
FAMILY
Joe comes from a family of Marines; plenty of relatives on both sides have served. His father passed away shortly after Joe became an N7 (heart attack), but his mother Patricia is alive and well.
He is the youngest of three children. He has an older brother James, who his father disowned when he found out he is gay. James is a soft-spoken art history professor married to an artist named Gary, who dislikes Joe intensely. After James is his older sister Marie, who is a veterinarian and is married to another veterinarian named Tom.
He is also close friends with Martin Santos, a medically retired N7. Martin runs a bar down in Rio de Janeiro and has extensive contacts not only in the mercenary community but also the Alliance military, allowing him to be well-informed about events as well as enabling him to "acquire" items normally not available to the public.
BACKSTORY
Most of Joe's early life was dominated by his father, a Marine "lifer" who did not know how to stop being a Marine around his family. His wife, the daughter of a Marine, was able to handle it better than most, but his children did not. He was obsessed with continuing his family's history of military service, but he was also a throwback to the time when it was commonly believed that women and gays could not (& should not) serve; he alternated between ignoring his older children and belittling them. But in his eyes, Joe could do no wrong, lavishing his attention and praise for him and him alone. He also saw in him a chance to go farther than any other Fischer had, and so he began "training" him to join the Marines when he was only 6.
Joe's first major loss came when he was 17, when assigned to partner up for an astronomy project with a shy girl named Sarah. Along the way, he found himself falling for her; to this day he's unsure what it was that attracted him to her. His friends gave him a lot of grief for it, but he ignored them; he was fully in her thrall. It came crashing down the night of senior prom. They broke away from the event and went into some nearby woods, where they made love. He told her of his plans of join the Marines, and she reacted by stepping off a cliff and killing herself. Shortly afterwards, he received an disc from her, which showed her father sexually abusing her. For the first time in his life he knew what it was like to want to kill someone, and it was only through the combined efforts of his parents to get him to stand down. To this day he is still haunted by the night she killed herself.
He followed through on his commitment to join the Marines, and since day one he served with distinction, and as a result received an invitation to join the most elite of the Alliance military, the famed N7 program. To this day it is the hardest training he has ever undergone; he felt the urge to quit at least once every week of the grueling selection process, but whenever he found himself thinking like that, he realized he owed it to Sarah to keep going and so he did. In the end, he was one of 18 out of a class of 87 to succeed.
His career continued to be nothing but exemplary, serving in all sorts of action all across the galaxy, but it all came to an end when he and his team were given the mission to defend a small colony against a gang of pirates. As soon as they arrived, they quickly found themselves in over their heads, facing a much larger gang than what they had been lead to believe as well as finding out they were there to secure one of the largest eezo mother lodes in Alliance space. They called for backup, but it arrived too late. By the time it got there, four out of five members of his team had been killed, including the squad leader, and he was on the verge of joining them.
When he woke up, he found himself facing a court-martial for his failure, and it was only through the intervention of some high-ranking generals that he managed to avoid it. But the intervention came with a price: he had to leave to the service. Feeling nothing but betrayal at the hands of the very people he had sworn to serve and defend, he did.
