Background:
Anelya and her twin sister Enaya grew up on Thessia. They were the pure-blood daughters of two prominent asari. When their parentage was discovered, their "mother" and "father" lost their social status, though not their fortune. The family traveled much of asari space before the children hit puberty, at which point their parents decided it was time for them to start becoming more independent, sending them to the most prestigious boarding school on Illium. When they were of age, they submitted their applications to the University of Thessia. After getting their undergraduate degrees, they decided to travel for a time.
It was during this time that their parents explained that the children possessed a unique genetic trait, that which was required to become an asari Consort. The parents explained that their reasons for not telling the girls sooner was that they wished them to acquire an education and get a taste of the universe before committing to the training required to become a Consort. Knowing the glamour and status associated with the order, the twins agreed that they wished to investigate what it would mean to be members of it. Knowing, however, the prejudice pure-bloods faced on many asari worlds, they picked the one Consort they knew was like no other.
The pair went to the Citadel and approached Sha'ira about becoming her apprentices. The older asari was intrigued by the girls, both because no Consort-candidate had ever chosen to approach her as an apprentice due to her choice to offer her services to other races and because there were no other known asari twins to possess the genetic traits required to be a member of the order. For several years, Sha'ira taught them both how to exploit their telepathic bond as twins and the unique perceptive skills of a Consort to its fullest. For the older woman, who had no daughters of her own, she came to see the pair as her adoptive children. For their part, the twins accepted her as a second "father." This is why it was so hard for all involved when Sha'ira had to send the pair out into the galaxy, to learn about the other races they would one day be serving.
Not wishing to prolong the situation, the two took passage on the first vessel they could, a volus freighter. Over the next five years, they spent time among the volus, either on ships or on their worlds, learning the bodies, souls, spirits (and suits) of the race as intimately as any being could. At last, they found themselves on their last journey with the volus, after which they planned to find passage on a turian vessel. Unexpectedly, though, the vessel was attacked by raiders, and the pair were taken prisoner. The pirates intended to use the pair and then sell them as slaves, however Maelstrom and the crew of the Valiant saved the pair.
They now travel on the Valiant, seeking to understand the remarkable individuals who make their living working for Esteban Bridges- the kind of people who leave a mark on the galaxy and which every Consort hopes one day to inspire.
Personality:
As twinned asari, Anelya and her sister share and innate telepathic bond. The same genetic trait which gives them their potential as Consorts further intensifies this bond. When in close proximity, they are able to sense one another's thoughts and communicate very clearly on an instinctual level. This allows them to, when together, utilize one another's skills. Though untested, they also found at their boarding school that this gave them an advantage over their peers in team combat sports. Naturally, they often finish each others sentences and thoughts when in conversations with others, particularly when they share a common goal, such as when they are using their skills as Consorts.
The two women while physically identical, though, are unique individuals. Anelya tends to be more conservative than her sister and often concerned with the morality and inherent rightness of actions. She also tends to be the more spiritually-minded of the pair. While many siarists would not consider her an strict adherent of their religion, due to some of her unique views, she sees herself as the consumate siarist, believing that if all beings are made of the same spiritual energy, each spirituality practiced in the galaxy must have a shred of a greater truth. As such, she has studied all of the galaxy's major religions and can quote the bible just as easily as the siarist texts and the ancient teachings of the priests and priestesses of Kahje.
She also tends to be the more technically-minded of the pair. During her time studying at the University of Thessia, she studied technological systems. While she has a working knowledge of most common components aboard starships, her specialty is in network security. The attraction of the field to her is in the ability to be creative within the strict confines of a modern operating system.
Anelya is protective of her order's (Consorts') reputation, knowing much of the galaxy sees them as nothing more than expensive prostitutes. Sha'ira once noted with disappointment that this often prevents Anelya from shying away from sexual experiences even with those who understand the purpose of the order and for whom such an experience could be seen as an opportunity for personal and spiritual growth for both Consort and client.
