He awoke with melancholy so heavy he could barely move at first. It had been two weeks since his father's passing and Lekuhn still had not adjusted to these mornings without Rekuhn's voice waking him for breakfast. He knew something was wrong with his father. Rekuhn would wheeze and cough at times to the point he would go elsewhere to hide it. Lekuhn never asked his father what was wrong. He knew the stoic Drell would never trouble his son with such things. Still, he worried about his father and took special note of the increasing changes in his health.
At thirteen, the young Drell had seen much for his age; good and bad. His eyes had taken in the wonder of the galaxy and the horrors of combat. He had been there when they found his mother lying alone, lifeless. Rekuhn could only speculate why she had the three holes at the base of her skull. Otherwise, she was unblemished. It was as if someone sneaked up and drained her soul from her body.
"They were after her memories" Rekuhn had said, though Lekuhn could not understand why anyone would do that.
His mother was always a simple person. Engaging life and her line of work with humility and persistence. Why anyone would need her memories was beyond him. All he knew was that he missed her every second and now his father was gone too. He was so grateful they had met the Asari on the space station. She would never replace Omilya, but she soothed Lekuhn's heart and mind for the next three years. Ten is a tender age to lose someone as close as a mother and the Asari sensed the need in him immediately. She had taken his hand within ten minutes of their meeting and walked with him, speaking of matters of the mind and heart. He grew fond of her quickly. So did his father and Lekuhn could tell a romance quickly developed between the two.
She was a counselor on the gateway near a mass relay they were about to take. They had finished a mission in which Rekuhn had sustained injuries beyond what the medi-gel they had in supply could fix. The Asari knew right away that Rekuhn had deeper psychological wounds than physical and demanded he talk to her. After their meeting, Rekuhn stayed another week, going to sessions. Lekuhn would also spend time talking to Jesara, working through some of the feelings surrounding losing his mother. She was different than Omilya for sure; complex and philosophical, but had the same tender heart.
"Come with us to the Citadel." he had heard his father say the day they were leaving.
"My place is here, Rekuhn" she said. "Besides, that would be highly unethical."
In the end, the old Drell convinced her. She must have loved him, because she ended her career that day. She had been a counselor for thirty years. They rested at the Citadel and Rekuhn seemed to feel much better, though he still retained his chronic hacking that sent him to the bathroom or other places to cover it up. Mentally, though, he was a different man. He awoke every morning with a smile and vigor for what the day had in store. The three departed from the Citadel after several weeks. Rekuhn was eager to get back to work and find a few jobs. Jesara did not like the idea of being involved with mercenary work, but conceded in the end. She remained with them for the next three years and the Drell and his son grew closer to her, relying on her strength to get them through hard times.
After a mission on Nirvana, Rekhun came back worse for the wear. He had not taken Jesara or Lekuhn with him and had paid for a room on a nearby space station. In combat, the Turian he was paid to eliminate wounded him and it seemed his immune system was not up to the challenge of healing. He grew weaker and weaker. The doctors on the station said he had Kepral's syndrome, much to the surprise of Jesara and Lekuhn. On the day he died, she did something amazing.
"Come here little one." she said, placing a hand on his father's head.
When he came to her she placed her hand on his head too. No doctors were present and no one saw this except the three involved. As soon as she touched Lekuhn, his mind was flooded with thoughts and visions he did not understand. He saw places and people he had never seen before; heard voices he had never heard. They all passed through his consciousness with lighting quickness. When he became aware of his surroundings again, his father was dead and Jesara sat wide eyed, looking terrified. The next two weeks, she became increasingly more unpredictable, muttering to herself at times or grasping at things that weren't there. He was very worried about her, but didn't know what to do. Most days she would remain in her room and rarely ate.
This morning, he called for her and she did not answer. He thought she was just acting strangely as was usual recently. He searched the room for her and she was not there. He waited for a time to see if she had just gone out and would come back, but after a few hours he became very uneasy and could not bear not looking for her. The space station was small, so it did not take him long to cover all the floors in search of her. She was nowhere to be found.
Lekuhn panicked. He felt he could not breath and was dizzy. He ran back to his room, buried his face in his pillow and cried like he had never cried before.
I will find you, he thought.
I MUST!
He spent three years searching for her. At the age of thirteen, he was forced to become a Drell grown and by sixteen he was taking his own mercenary jobs. He still seeks Jesara. To this day, every Asari face makes him think of her.
