Rather than creating a poll asking people who their favorite characters, I'll just go with a post. For me, the appeal of the franchise was as much the people in it as the story (screw you, Mass Effect 3 original ending!). I'll be going in chronological order, trying to order them in terms of who I like the most would make my head explode.
GOOD GUYS
Garrus: I liked him mostly for his sense of humor. It could be a bit bleak at times, but it rarely failed to put a smile on my face.
Wrex: I liked him for his strong sense of purpose. This was a guy who saw the state his people was in and took it upon himself to fix it, that takes a lot of strength.
Grunt: I liked his almost childlike innocence in his use of violence, but he wasn't just some mindless berserker; like Wrex, he was a lot smarter than he let on.
Thane: I liked him for his spiritual side, that's not something you would expect to find in an assassin.
Legion: I liked him for the same reason I liked Spock; he certainly found organics confusing and illogical at times, but he also respected their right for self-determination and was willing to fight for it.
EDI: I liked her for her morality and her sense of humor. Best quote, IMO, was from #2: "I enjoy the sight of humans on their knees."
Javik: Yeah, the guy was intense, but I liked how he was able to loosen up.
BAD GUYS
Illusive Man: Pretty much starts and stops with him. This was a guy who fully believed it was humanity's destiny to rule the galaxy and was willing to sacrifice anyone and anything to achieve that end, telling himself it was for the good of all mankind. This guy is truly frightening.
SOMEWHERE IN THE MIDDLE
Aria T'Loak: She is by no means a saint, but she is practical enough to help Shepard.

Actually, for me it would go...
Good Guys- 1) Tali: My love interest in the game, also a very unique character. 2) Garrus: He's the most loyal person in the game, and he's got the perfect sense of humor for the kind of Hell you're always flying into. 3) Anderson: If there's any person who believes in Shepard as much as Garrus or the love interest, it's Anderson. That, and he takes the threat more seriously than most anyone else. 4) Mordin: "I am the very model of a scientist salarian!" 5) Wrex: One of the few completely straightforward people in the series. 6) Joker: There's no one else like him, and he lightens the mood well. 7) Legion: A wonderful look into the Geth Consensus.
Bad Guys- Sovereign: For the conversation on Virmire alone.
Somewhere in the Middle- Liara: Sorry, but going Shadow Broker puts you somewhere in the middle. She has to walk a real line.

I never really pursued the romance angle much, in which one did you get Tali?

Tali is only able to me romanced in ME2 and ME3 then whoever you romanced in ME1 when you meet again in ME3 you have to ask to just be friends then when Tali reappears you can continue the romance.

Yeah, first time through ME2 I was depressed because there was no one I really wanted to pursue until I realized Tali was open. The friend I first played the game with and myself had both been bummed out that she was not a romance option in ME1, because we both liked her better. In ME3, I had very little problem leaving Liara for Tali. Not having played Lair of the Shadow Broker yet, Liara just didn't seem to have anywhere near the loyalty that Tali did.

I accidentally romanced Tali during my first play-through and decided to keep it since i thought it was adorable - On the subject of favorite character's i think that mine was legion, Mordin and Thane. Don't get me wrong i liked the other characters but i enjoyed having Thane for his insight of being an assassin but logical in a sense.
I liked Legion since he was pretty much the only non shooty connection with the geth and i found them interesting since mass effect 1 so i was overjoyed to add him to the team in ME2.
Mordin Was always with me in ME2 for most missions, i loved his wit, the way he acted and the way of being a doctor but with his methods of killing to save people “Lots of ways to help people. Sometimes heal patients; sometimes execute dangerous people. Either way helps.” as he stated.
