BACKSTORY
As batarians go, Ghorith Gheg’ranak had a pretty good life: the son of a well-connected politician, a position of authority in the elite Special Intervention Unit, a family of his own and a well-appointed house with a handful of slaves.
But all of it changed in the blink of an eye. Arrested on charges of dealing red sand—which he later learned was set up by one of his most trusted lieutenants—he was being transported to a detention center when he broke free. He raced to his house and arrived just in time to see his family being dragged away by the authorities.
As much as he wanted to save them, he was outnumbered and outgunned, and made the almost impossible decision of leaving them to their fate and fleeing batarian space. He knew there was an underground black market and dissident movement among his people, despite the best efforts to eradicate them.
While he was able to flee batarian space through the same black market he had hunted, that is all it did, leaving him with no job or a place to live. He was not about to join a mercenary band and put his fate in the hands of others, so he went into business for himself as a bounty hunter.
In addition to his work he also carries out attacks against red sand dealers.
PERSONALITY
Such a loss may have embittered many batarians, but Ghorith is not one of them. He might have though, if not for him ducking into a makeshift batarian chapel in Omega. Hearing the preacher talk, he came to believe he had been punished by the gods for taking them for granted and was cast down among the lesser races (all non-batarians).
He devotes most of his proceeds from his work to support the lower castes of batarians, holding back only enough to maintain his weapons and equipment.
With the recent blackout of batarian space, he believes his home has been invaded and his family killed. He believes that he will see them in the afterlife but only after he has atoned for his sins, which may not happen in this lifetime; he may be reincarnated several times in order to fully atone. The surest way to do so is to purge the galaxy of all the unrighteous and to die in glorious battle.
VIEWS OF OTHER RACES
While he looks down on other races, he views them as reincarnated batarians who have not atoned for their sins and he has been put down among them to as an example to show them the proper way to atone. He does not view them with dislike, disgust or anger, but rather varying levels of pity depending on their race. He views more aggressive and military-minded races higher, such as krogan, turians and humans, while physically weaker races (salarian, vorcha, quarian and volus) are ranked lower.
