I play overly confident characters all the time. It's nice to play a meeker character.
Aries, the Blue Sun, could always make a scary appearance.

We also have a lot of characters that, on the surface, seem to be fairly fresh in combat experience. Not lacking experience in other ways, but. If read like a book, why would this team have been chosen? Some sort of experiment maybe? It's like those situations where the writer puts up with some loss of continuity for following an interesting plot line, testing characters in some way. Then people read it, get hyper-critical and ignore what's good about the story.
