Name: Emily
Race: VI
Allies: Maelstrom
Enemies: Cerberus
History:
Emily was originally an unnamed VI programmed by Cerberus for use on a long-range shuttle. It was programmed with the capability to operate all the vessel's systems as an aid to the Cerberus teams and as a backup should the pilot become in some way incapacitated. Its abilities extended to piloting the vessel both in and out of combat and firing the vessel's modest forward weapons battery. Cerberus teams did note, however, that the combat effectiveness of the VI's piloting was largely limited to stealth trajectories and evasive maneuvers, as predicting and tracking the evasive maneuvers of organic pilots proved too great a challenge for even the most advanced VI's. Other key functions of the unit were to provide security for the shuttle from cyberwarfare attacks, hack enemy security feeds, and conduct database and extranet searches.
Upon Maelstrom's commandeering of the shuttle in which the VI was installed, he was able to outsmart the Cerberus security protocols active in the unit. It was later rebuilt from the ground up by a salarian programmer working for the Blue Suns. This programmer was successful in eliminating all Cerberus loyalties and, further, altering the program to consider Cerberus to be a threat. In addition, he was contracted to design and implement significant upgrades to the unit's personality profile, designing it to emulate human behaviors, expressions, and emotions to a great degree as well as providing it with a humanoid avatar with which to present itself.
The unit was further modified by Maelstrom with the introduction of a modified Cerberus anti-infiltration program as well as the later addition of several task-specific VI's to protect the unit and oversee shuttle security. These programs eliminated all viruses and backdoor access points remaining in the program from the salarian who preformed the original modification.
Maelstrom has since given a number of directives to the program, which he renamed "Emily," including tactical, behavioral, and security directives. He also has acquired an audiovisual recording and communications device (and a second in his helmet) through which Emily can monitor his surroundings and provide him with useful input. The devices have a relatively short range, though, outside which communication with Emily must take place via standard comms channels. For subtle use, Maelstrom has taught Emily a number of visual signals to allow him to communicate with her covertly when in tense combat situations or social situations, so verbal cues do not give away his intent.
It should be noted that, at present, the Emily VI is inseparable from hardware installed aboard the Vengeance. It would take significant technical knowledge and a substantial amount of work to remove it from the vessel.
